KVFD firefighters are trained to deal with all kinds of
emergencies. However, some rare emergency situations require very specialized
training and equipment. The KVFD Special Services Team was formed to help our
community deal more effectively with the most unusual and difficult emergencies
that firefighters sometimes face.
The KVFD Special Services Team consists of approximately
twenty of KVFD’s most experienced firefighters who participate in specialized
advanced training classes to learn how to deal with hazardous material
emergencies, technical rescue situations, and other unusual incidents. Special
Services Team members practice their skills during regular training drills that
simulate various uncommon emergencies that may someday challenge local emergency
services.
KVFD Special Services Team members receive advanced
training for high-angle rescue, water rescue, confined space rescue, hazmat, and
emergency medical services. Most team members hold advanced certifications in
one or more of these areas.
When KVFD firefighters become involved in situations that
require response capabilities beyond the level of the local engine company, KVFD
Special Services Team members respond to the emergency scenes to provide
additional manpower, specialized equipment, and technical advice to the incident
commanders. When necessary, KVFD Special Services Team members call for
regional response resources, such as the Harris County Hazardous Materials
Response Team or the Houston Fire Department Technical Rescue Team.
KVFD Special Services Team members maintain the Hazmat/Decon
trailer that is housed at Station 37 (TR37), the Special Services utility truck
(U37), Rescue Boat 37 (RB37), Rescue Boat 35 (RB35), and the technical rescue
equipment on KVFD’s heavy rescue rig (R34). Experienced firefighters from all
seven stations are invited to participate in the Special Services Team, as long
has they are willing to participate in regular advanced training above and
beyond normal training requirements.
